Rye Harbor, NH

Introduction

Rye is the only town in New Hampshire with islands in the Atlantic that belong to it—the Isles of Shoals. The town features eight scenic miles of coastline, a large and well-maintained state park, and plenty of shore-side and water-related activities for visitors to enjoy. According to the 2000 Census, Rye has 5,182 permanent residents, though the summer population can grow to nearly three times that number.

Many visitors come to Rye to explore its historic Colonial homes, enjoy fresh local seafood at the many waterfront restaurants, or tie up their boat for the night and relax in the peaceful, well-protected harbor.

History

The town of Rye was named after Rye, England, though it was first settled as the Pannaway Plantation in 1632. English and European fishermen worked the waters around the nearby Isles of Shoals, harvesting fish that were salted and dried to help supply the early settlers.

A little-known fact is that Rye was also the receiving station for one of the first transatlantic cables, which was laid in 1874.

Things To Do / Local Events

With Odiorne Point State Park, Wallis Sands State Beach, Jenness State Beach, and Rye Harbor State Park all nearby, many visitors take time to walk the beaches, explore nature trails, or simply relax and watch the tide roll in. Rye Harbor State Park includes a large area just north of the harbor in Awcomin Marsh. Hiking and biking trails are available throughout the parks, though a small entrance fee may be required at some locations.

Whale watching tours and fishing charters also depart from the harbor for daily excursions. Check with local harbor facilities for schedules and departure times.
